16 S2/3 played the first ever rugby league matches contested by The Gordon Schools in the Matchpoint Saltire Schools Cup (U15 North). In a 3 team tournament the boys’ first opponenets were an experienced team from Westhill Academy. Fortunately The Gordon Schools were able to get on the score sheet first with two early tries, but Westhill then managed to close the deficit with a try in return. The first half ended 18-4 to The Gordon Schools. The second half was a much tighter, feistier affair with the tackles coming in thick and fast. In one particular phase Martin Young made 3 consecutive individual tackles restricting Westhill to a mere 5m gain. The whitewash wasn’t crossed in the second half so the final score remained 18-4 to The Gordon Schools.
Next up were Turriff Academy. Also playing their first ever official games of Rugby League, Turriff presented stiff opposition to The Gordon Schools in the first half. Having conceded an early try Turriff fought back strongly and crossed the whitewash to even the scores at 4-4. However as the match wore on the overall level of fitness and experience of the Huntly boys began to tell. Strong running by Roddy Howe, Lewis Buxton, Yanick Sutcliffe and Angus Duncan all lead to tries. The final score was 32-4, which meant that having won both their games The Gordon Schools were crowned U15 North of Scotland Schools Rugby League champions. The conduct of the boys both on and off the pitch was exemplary and whilst there isn’t the space to mention everyone in the team all deserve recgnition for the part they played in a superb team performance.
